Kenya, China to further strengthen bilateral relations

Kenya and China continue to build on their warm and cordial relations through the enhancement of bilateral interaction in the political, economic and social fields, and such relations are bound to be further enhanced through joint efforts of both sides, a senior Kenyan official said in Nairobi Friday.

Kenya and China continue to build on their warm and cordial relations through the enhancement of bilateral interaction in the political, economic and social fields, and such relations are bound to be further enhanced through joint efforts of both sides, a senior Kenyan official said in Nairobi Friday.

"I am proud to note that this year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Kenya and China on Dec. 14, 1963," Kenyan Minister for Local Government Karisa Maitha said while addressing a reception in the Chinese embassy.

"Since that time our two sides have worked closely together to ensure that the ties between our countries grows from strength to strength," he added at the reception marking the 54th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China which falls on Oct. 1.

The minister said Kenya continues its steadfast support for the "One-China" policy.

"Kenya is also impressed with the Chinese philosophy of 'Three Represents' which has been developed to suit China's reality in the 21st century, whereby the (Chinese Communist) Party must always represent the requirements of the development trend of China's advanced productive forces, the orientation of the development of China's advanced culture and the fundamental interests of the overwhelming majority of the people in China," he said.

Maitha's words were echoed by Chinese Ambassador to Kenya Guo Chongli, who also addressed the gathering.

Guo said he has been greatly impressed with the cordial relationship existing between China and Kenya and the friendship cherished by the two peoples ever since he set his foot on this beautiful land in April.

"China is the biggest developing country undergoing modernization while Kenya is one of the African countries with great development potentials. The two countries share similar historical experiences and are facing the same task of development," Guo said.

"China always treasures Sino-Kenyan friendship and is ready to make great efforts, together with the new Kenyan government and the people of Kenya, to bring our long-term and mutually beneficial relations and friendly cooperation into the future," he said.

Some 250 people were present at the gathering, including Kenyan cabinet ministers Peter Anyang Nyongo and Peter Ndwiga, Kenyan Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly David Musila, and Kenyan Chief of General Staff Joseph Kibwana.

Meanwhile, on the occasion of China's National Day, Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki on Friday sent a congratulatory message to Chinese President Hu Jintao.
