Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Friday continued a flurry of diplomacy on the sidelines of the 58th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Meeting Julian Hunte, president of the current session of the General Assembly and foreign minister of Saint Lucia, Li said multilateralism has become the universal appeal of the international community today.

As an inter-governmental body with 191 member nations, the United Nations should serve as an arena for countries to participate in the global management of world affairs and make international relations more democratic and more legalized, he said.

Li pledged China's steadfast support for the UN's key role in world affairs.

The Chinese foreign minister also held talks with his counterparts from the EU troika. He noted that the two sides shared similar views on many issues, including the democratization and legalization of international relations, the need to maintain the diversity of world civilizations and the need to strengthen the UN's role and the Security Council's authority.

This consensus has formed a solid foundation for bilateral cooperation on international and regional issues, which is conducive to world peace and development, Li said.

He urged the EU countries to seize the unprecedented opportunity for developing the China-EU ties and work together to ensure the sound and steady growth of the all-round partnership between them.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini, whose country currently holds the EU's rotating presidency, expressed his satisfaction over the EU-China relations and his willingness to promote their further development.

Both sides had a candid exchange of views on a number of issues, including human rights, nonproliferation, and the nuclear issue onthe Korean Peninsula and the Iraq issue.

In his talks with the foreign ministers of the Rio Group and Andean Community's member countries, Li said the new century has witnessed the smooth development of the friendly relations betweenChina and Latin American countries.

He noted that China has always attached great importance to itssolidarity and cooperation with the developing world, and is ready to further promote mutual understanding with Latin American nations.

He said both sides should treat each other equally and help each other in achieving common development.

Peruvian Foreign Minister Allan Wagner Tizon praised the development of relations between China and Latin American countries, saying he is ready to work for their further growth.
