14 killed in bus mishap in northern Philippines

Fourteen people were killed and more than 60 others injured after two mini-buses collided and one of them then crashed into a waiting shed in the northern Philippines on Saturday.

Fourteen people were killed and more than 60 others injured after two mini-buses collided and one of them then crashed into a waiting shed in the northern Philippines on Saturday.

The accident happened in Mariveles town in Bataan province early Saturday morning when the two mini-buses tried to overtake each other on their way to pick up waiting workers of the Bataan Economic Zone, The Philippine Star daily reported Sunday.

One mini-bus slammed into the rear of another it was trying to overtake, throwing the second vehicle into a deep roadside ravine,the daily quoted local police as saying.

Losing control after the collision, the first bus then crossed over to the opposite side of the road and plowed into a crowd at abus stop, demolishing the waiting shed and killing the driver and at least five other persons instantly.

Initial reports said many of the injured were in critical condition. Some victims were reported to have lost arms and legs in the accident.
