Pakistan on Monday rejected al-Qaeda leader Aiman al-Zawahiri's threats against President Pervez Musharraf and said the country will continue to play its part in the fight against international terrorism.

"Al-Qaeda is a terrorist organization and Pakistan's war on terrorism and pursuit of terrorists will continue despite these threats," Foreign Ministry spokesman Masood Khan told reporters ata weekly press briefing. The spokesman made the remarks while replying to a question about an audio tape purported to be issued last week by al-Zawahiri, the number two of al-Qaeda.

Al-Zawahiri reportedly accused Pakistan of supporting the United States against former Afghan Taliban regime and al-Qaeda and asked the Pakistanis to overthrow Musharaf's rule.

Rejecting the allegations, Masood said these are misplaced and deliberately designed to mislead the Pakistani people and the Islamic world. He added the anti-terror war has made Pakistan vulnerable.

Asked about Afghan President Hamid Karzai's statement made lastweek in New York that people are coming from religious schools in Pakistan for terrorist activities in Afghanistan, the spokesman described it as "totally baseless" and "unsubstantial."

Masood said there is a problem along Pak-Afghan border. While smaller size of al-Qaeda and Taliban remnants may be on the Pakistani side, the majority of them is on the Afghan side, he said.
