Railway passenger volume in China amounted to over four million people on the first day of the National Day Holiday, hitting a record high since the country launched the seven-day holiday in 1999, according to statistics from the Ministry of Railways (MR).

According to Wu Qiang, MR head of transport, the total number of railway passengers on Oct. 1, mainly composed of tourists and people returning home to visit relatives, was 239,000 people more than the same day last year.

Major cities attracting large passenger flows include Beijing, Shanghai, Nanjing, Guangzhou, Dalian, Harbin, Wuhan, Xi'an, Kunming, Suzhou, and Hangzhou.

A round-the-clock work team, running from Sept. 28 to Oct. 7, will keep watch on transport information from all the country's railways and deal with inquiries and complaints from tourists.

According to the latest MR prediction, the country's annual railway passenger volume will climb up to four billion people by 2020, nearly four times the current 1.05 billion people.

With the accelerated progress of urbanization, more than 400 million rural workers will move to cities and towns by 2020, which will increase demand for public transport.

Cargo volumes by railway will increase by 118 percent by 2020, if calculated at the existing annual growth rate of five percent.
