HKSAR government sets up two sports committees

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has set up two sports committees to promote the sporting culture in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government has set up two sports committees to promote the sporting culture in Hong Kong.

According to a government press release Sunday, the Community Sports Committee will be chaired by Chau How-chen and the Major Sports Events Committee by Herman Hu Shao-ming.

Secretary for Home Affairs Patrick Ho was quoted Sunday as saying that "the Community Sports Committee will advise the government on the strategies to promote community participation insports, and ways to foster partnership with different sectors in all 18 districts for promotion of community sport.

"The committee will seek to develop a closer working relationship with District Councils, local sports bodies and the education sector with a view to promoting activities and creating a sustainable sporting culture at the community level."

"The Major Sports Events Committee will advise the government on the initiatives for the promotion of major sports events in Hong Kong. Through inter-sectoral collaboration, it will cultivateand mobilize corporate sponsorship and the support of key stakeholders from the sports, tourism and business sectors to hostmajor sporting events on a regular basis, which would in turn add impetus to sports development and generate economic benefits to the community."

The two committees will also make recommendations on the funding priorities in respect of community sports and major sportsevents in Hong Kong.
