Oil tanker sinks off south China, crew saved

An oil tanker ran on rocks off the coast of Shantou, Guangdong Province in south China Saturday night, and all the 15 crew members have been saved.

An oil tanker ran on rocks off the coast of Shantou, Guangdong Province in south China Saturday night, and all the 15 crew members have been saved.

The 3,000-dwt tanker struck rocks and sank slowly at about 10:00 p.m. Saturday on its way from Shenzhen in Guangdong to Shanghai.

As the tanker carried no oil, the accident did not cause serious pollution.

The Shantou maritime bureau sent rescuers to the scene right after getting reports from the tanker.

Salvage of the tanker is underway.
