China's youngest municipality reports robust GDP growth

Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality reported nearly 137.68 billion yuan (16.59 billion US dollars) of GDP (gross domestic product) in the first eight months, up 11.1 percent from the same period last year.

Southwest China's Chongqing Municipality reported nearly 137.68 billion yuan (16.59 billion US dollars) of GDP (gross domestic product) in the first eight months, up 11.1 percent from the same period last year.

The growth rate is about 0.9 percent higher than last year, according to the municipal bureau of statistics.

During the January-August period, primary industry reported 19.30 billion yuan of growth, up 3.4 percent year-on-year; secondary industry reported 60.49 billion yuan of growth, up 15.6 percent year-on-year; tertiary industry realized 57.88 billion yuan of growth, up 9.1 percent year-on-year, according to the municipal bureau of statistics.

Secondary industry has contributed the most to the economy, contributing about 62.4 percent of the municipal's economic growth, while tertiary industry follows, adding about 33.1 percent.

Located in the southwest, Chongqing is an industrial base and traffic hub in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River. In 1997, Chongqing was enlisted as China's fourth municipality under the direst leadership of the central government or the State Council, along with Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.
