An Israeli soldier was killed Monday at the Lebanese border by shots fired from Lebanon, the Israel army said.

The soldier was killed in an exchange of gunfire along the border fence with Lebanon near Metulla, Israel Defense Forces (IDF)announced.

According to Israel Radio, the incident occurred when two car sapproached the border fence from the Lebanese side and its occupants opened fire on the IDF patrol troops on the other side. Meanwhile, reports from Lebanon said it was not clear who opened fire first.

A number of bullets hit the nearby village Kila and struck a UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) water truck, but there were no reports of Lebanese casualties except for damages to one of the vehicles, reports reaching here said.

No organization has claimed responsibility for the incident even though IDF sources said it might have been carried out by Hezbollah.

The shooting came a day after Israeli warplanes bombed an alleged Palestinian terrorist training camp in Syria in retaliation for a suicide bombing attack in Haifa which killed 19 people. While eight soldiers have been killed and 46 wounded since Israel pulled out of Lebanon in May 2000, shootings along the border near Metulla have been very rare, local Israeli media said.
