11th Uganda Int'l Trade Fair opens

The 11th Uganda International TradeFair (UGITF 2003) opened Tuesday morning at Lugogo Show Grounds in east Kampala, capital of Uganda.

The 11th Uganda International TradeFair (UGITF 2003) opened Tuesday morning at Lugogo Show Grounds in east Kampala, capital of Uganda.

Mr. Sam Apodel, Director of Information and Communications fromthe Uganda Manufactures Associations (UMA), told Xinhua Tuesday morning at his office that "this year we expect 600 exhibitors from over 30 countries and over 200,000 visitors to participate inthe one-week trade fair."

He said products and services to be exhibited from many sectorsinclude plastic, rubber and foam products, metal products, foods and beverages, among others.

On the theme of "invest in Uganda for a wider regional market,"Apodel said the theme emphasizes on Uganda's strategic location asthe East African Community takes shape.

He pointed out that Uganda is aware of the competition brought by the launch of East Africa Customs Union in November 2003, "butwe shall make sure that our industries continue to grow."

UGITF is an event that has promoted Uganda's economy by exposing Uganda to international business entities and employed more people and contributed more taxes to the government.

"This year's trade fair is better organized and public interestappears bigger than ever before," he said, adding that "there is also a bigger number of new small-scale manufactures and trades."

The one-week UGITF will be officially opened on Wednesday afternoon by President Yoweri Museveni, according to UMA, who is the organizer of the yearly event to mark Uganda's independence day of October 9, 1961.

The Uganda International Trade Fair was launched in 1993 and some 560 exhibitors from 32 countries attended the 10th trade fairlast year.
