Two senior Chechen officials killed after presidential election

Two senior officials of the Chechen Interior Ministry were killed on Tuesday in Grozny, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

Two senior officials of the Chechen Interior Ministry were killed on Tuesday in Grozny, Itar-Tass reported Wednesday.

Unidentified attackers in a white car WAZ 2106 opened submachine gunfire at the car carrying the two officials in Zhukovsky street in the Leninsky district of the Chechen capital city.

Department chief of the ministry Sergei Sukhonogov died instantly and his deputy, Major Sergei Yenin, died of wounds in a local hospital. Investigation of the incident is underway and local police forces are hunting for the culprits.

Chechen officials have been targets of attacks and assassinations by local rebels. This incident was the first serious case following the presidential election on Sunday.

The Chechen election commission officially announced on Tuesday that Kremlin-backed Chechen administrative head Akhmad Kadyrov won the election campaign with 80.84 percent ballots and will swear in on Oct. 19 as the president of the war-ravaged republic in Russia's North Caucasus.

No major terrorist attacks were reported over the past few daysas Russian troops and police forces stationed in Chechnya have tightened security measures to ensure a smooth election process.
