Some 500 mln dollars approved to help SARS impacted industries in HK

A total of 499 million HK dollars(63.97 million US dollars) has been approved to help SARS impactedindustries in Hong Kong, a government official said here Wednesday.

A total of 499 million HK dollars(63.97 million US dollars) has been approved to help SARS impactedindustries in Hong Kong, a government official said here Wednesday.

Secretary for Economic Development & Labor Stephen Ip told the Legislative Council that a total of 1,802 applications have been received under the 3.5 billion-HK dollar government Loan GuaranteeScheme for SARS impacted industries, and 1,559 applications totaling 499 million HK dollars have been approved so far.

According to Ip, the successful applicants together employ 18,236 staff.

Ip said the primary objectives of the scheme are to help needy operators tide over the difficult period and preserve their jobs, noting that in this regard, the scheme has achieved its intended objectives.

He pointed out that to date, the government has not received any information from lending institutions about closure of businesses by successful loan applicants after their loan drawdown.Nor has it received any request from lending institutions for government payment due to failure of lenders to repay.
