Russia is against the use of preventive strikes but it reserves the right to deliver such strikes, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday.

Meeting with German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder in Russia's Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, Putin said his country reserves the right to carry out such strikes if the practice continues to be used by other countries.

"If the practice of preemptive strikes is expanded and strengthened in the world, Russia will reserve the right to take such actions as well," he was quoted by Interfax as saying.

Earlier last week, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov said Moscow would not rule out the possibility of sending preventive forces to any part of the world to defend its interests.
