China's top legislator meets Irish president

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, met Friday with visiting Irish President Mary McAleese.

Wu Bangguo, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, met Friday with visiting Irish President Mary McAleese.

Wu said China and Ireland had maintained sound cooperation and shared views on many important world issues.

China's new collective leadership attached importance to developing cooperation with the European Union and Ireland, he said.

Wu said exchanges between parliaments constituted an important part of state-to-state relations, and China's NPC was ready to strengthen cooperation with Ireland on legislative issues.

McAleese recalled her visit to China six years ago, saying shehad witnessed the achievements of China, and vowed to further cooperation between Ireland and China.

She said China's opening-up and development offered opportunities for Ireland and the European Union, and Ireland would work with China to promote cooperation.
