Shanghai in east China is planning to construct a 30-square-kilometer artificial bay to improve its coastal view.

The project, called "golden beach and blue sea", is expected to start in 2005 in the Fengxian Bay Tourism Zone in southern Shanghai, according to Fang Tongmeng, director of administration committee of the tourism zone.

Fang said plan had been presented to the local government for approval.

To be completed in 2007, the project will include a 10-kilometer beach and facilities to clean the sea water.

Fang declined to give detailed investment for the project, but said it would be at least 4 billion yuan.

To ensure reliability of technologies used in the project, a smaller trial project to build a four-square-kilometer bay started here Friday. To be completed next year, the bay will be used for water sports, said Fang.

Fang said that salt content of seawater here is 1.25 percent. But because of silt filling up in the Yangtze River and the Hangzhou Bay, the seawater around the city is yellow rather than blue.

To change the color of the water, two water disposal facilities will be built at the two ends of the bay. The water will flow into the artificial bay after treatment.

The sand needed for the beach will come from south China's Hainan Province. Special technology will be used to help settle the sand, said Fang.
