315 offenders netted in anti-crime operation in HK

Totaling 315 offenders were arrested in a joint anti-crime operation which concluded in Hong Kong on Sunday morning, a police spokesman said.

Totaling 315 offenders were arrested in a joint anti-crime operation which concluded in Hong Kong on Sunday morning, a police spokesman said.

During the operation, 42 men and 273 women, aged between 16 and 58, were arrested for various offenses including illegal gambling, possession of dutiable cigarettes, obscene and pirated video compact discs, operating a divan and vice-related activities.

Of the arrested, the 273 women are two-way permit holders.

During the operation, about 61,538 pirated or obscene video compact discs worth 1 million Hong Kong dollars (128,205 US dollars), 5,480 sticks of dutiable cigarettes and a small quantity of dangerous drugs were seized.

The police spokesman said that similar operations would be mounted on a regular basis to stem out triad related activities.

Together with the Immigration Department, the Customs and Excise Department, and the Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority, the Hong Kong police, following extensive investigations, started on Saturday evening to mount the joint operation code-named "Jawbone".
