Buyers from the United Nations have been in Beijing to explain to more than 300 Chinese corporate representatives how they can become suppliers of goods and services to the world body. It's the first time the UN has held a procurement orientation session in China. The Beijing session on Sunday will be followed by two others in Guangdong later this month.

According to UN officials, the procurement of goods involves 11 UN agencies, mostly engaged in humanitarian assistance and peacekeeping operations. They say the UN has chosen China for large-scale procurement agreements because of its bullish economic growth prospects, as well as its huge potential for such cooperation.

"I think the Chinese market and Chinese exports are going to boom because of high quality of products, the entry into the WTO, and the restructuring of the producing sector generally through a lot of private sector involvement. I am very optimistic that China is going to lead the export of commodities to developed countries and to developing countries as well," said an UN agents coordinator.

There are many target items the UN wishes to procure from China, including information technology products, electrical appliances and machinery, agricultural produce and medical care equipment.

Statistics show the total value of UN procurements stood at 4.56 billion US dollars in 2002, but the value of procurements from China accounted for only 0.7 percent. According to UN officials, many products they have purchased in the past were made in China, but were re-sold to the UN via a third party. This had increased the UN procurement costs and also reduced the opportunities of direct trade between the UN and Chinese companies. The UN's large-scale direct procurement from China will definitely benefit both sides from now on.
