US Representative Dennis Kucinich officially announced his presidential candidacy Monday in Cleveland, Ohio.

"I'm running for president of the United States to enable the armies of peace," Kucinich told some 300 supporters at a meeting in his hometown.

"America cannot put its foot on the accelerator of war and advocate peace," said Kucinich, a four-term congressman who has been consistently opposed to the Iraq war.

If elected president, Kucinich said, he would try to solve the world's problems including the Palestinian-Israeli conflicts through nonviolent ways.

Since he began campaigning for the Democratic presidential nomination some eight months ago, Kucinich has made public his position on a number of issues: opposition to the US-led war in Iraq, favoring withdrawal of US forces from Iraq, an end to the North American Free Trade Agreement, and a universal health care system.

But he has trailed many of his rivals within the party vying for the presidential nomination in fund raising and public opinionpolls.

There are nine candidates competing for the Democratic presidential nomination, after Senator Bob Graham ended his campaign on Oct. 6.
