The South Korean government has decided to provide 100,000 tons of free fertilizer aid worth 30.6 billion won (26.6 million US dollars) to the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), the Ministry of Unification said on Tuesday.

The decision came one day before three-day inter-Korean ministerial talks are due to start Tuesday in Pyongyang.

The Unification Ministry, which handles inter-Korean affairs, said in a statement that the first fertilizer shipment will be made later this month, and it will take a month to complete the delivery.

Last month, Pyongyang asked Seoul for an additional 100,000 tons of fertilizer this fall. However, Seoul delayed the provisionof fertilizer after Typhoon Maemi ripped through the southwestern region of the country.

The typhoon caused 4.22 trillion won (3.67 billion US dollars) worth of property damage and left 131 dead or missing.

Seoul has so far offered Pyongyang 1 million tons of fertilizer, including 200,000 tons this year. South Korea is also in the process of shipping 400,000 tons of rice to the DPRK.
