Road accidents kill 9,661 in China during September

A total of 9,661 people were killed and 44,580 others injured in 59,431 road accidents during September across China, the Ministry of Public Security announced here Tuesday.

A total of 9,661 people were killed and 44,580 others injured in 59,431 road accidents during September across China, the Ministry of Public Security announced here Tuesday.

The numbers are respectively 5.4 percent, 13.8 percent and 14.3 percent down from September 2002.

The direct losses amounted to 290 million yuan (30 million US dollars), up 2.1 percent on a yearly basis.

Accidents that killed 10 or more people totaled five, two in Shandong and one for each of Hunan, Yunnan and Guizhou Provinces, in which 71 died and 72 were injured. Most of the accidents were caused by speeding passenger buses, a ministry spokesman said.

From January to September, a total of 510,412 road accidents occurred in China, leaving 75,892 dead, 376,348 injured and direct losses of 2.57 billion yuan (310 billion US dollars), respectively down 12.6 percent, 5.6 percent, 11.6 percent and up 4.85 percent from the same period last year, said the spokesman.
