Rodney King, the black man whose beating by white policemen sparked the worst US civil riots in 1992, was arrested for beating his girlfriend, authorities in California said Tuesday.

King was arrested Saturday after his girlfriend Joanne Naser alerted the police that she was punched by King in the stomach during an argument. He was then released Monday on 50,000-dollar bail, according to a records clerk at the West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga, California.

Naser claimed that King tried to choke her during a fighting last Friday night, and he was involved in more violence toward herthe next day.

After King's arrest, paramedics took Naser to Arrowhead Regional Medical Center in Colton, California., for examination.

In 1994, King was awarded 3.8 million US dollars in settlement by the Los Angeles city for his beating by four white policemen in1991 when he was stopped for speeding.

Riots broke out in Los Angeles in 1992 after a court acquitted the white policemen. The worst civil riots in the US history left 55 people dead and 1 billion dollars in property loss.

Since then, King has had a series of run-ins with the police, including a 1999 domestic violence conviction. In 2001, he pleadedno contest to indecent exposure and being under the influence of controlled substances. He was sentenced to a year in a drug treatment center.

A San Bernardino County Superior Court judge in August sentenced King to a three-month alcohol awareness program and six months of drug treatment and then four months in jail after he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence and reckless driving.

In that April accident, King raced through a Rialto intersection in his new car before losing control of the car, striking a utility pole, crashing into a fence and hitting a house.Police tests revealed he had a "significant amount" of controlled substance in his system. He was also placed on three years probation.
