East China's Zhejiang Province is building its second nuclear plant in Taizhou city, a plant bigger than the country's first Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in the province, an official said Tuesday.

Xia Xiaolin, an official of Zhejiang Provincial Development Planning Commission, spoke at a seminar on energy development strategy held in Hangzhou, the province's capital.

Xia said the construction of the new plant was approved last year, adding that other two construction projects of nuclear power plants also won approval from the central government, without giving further details.

The second and third phases of the Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant are near completion, thus bringing the plant's total installed capacity to 3 million kilowatts, he said.

The designed capacity of the new plant's first phase is expected to reach 2 million kilowatts, he said, adding that nuclear power will account for 10 percent of the province's electricity output in 2010.

Power shortages hit most of China's developed coastal areas amid the sweltering weather this summer, evoking fears of a possible economic slowdown due to power cuts.
