The Ugandan government has rejected the call by UN agencies to observe a ceasefire during themass measles immunization exercise between Oct. 15 and 19, reported The New Vision newspaper on Wednesday.

Ugandan Minister of State for Defense Ruth Nankabirwa was quoted as saying that the government could not be "misled" into declaring a ceasefire because the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) rebels "would take that advantage to disrupt the immunization exercise."

"We cannot trust Kony (rebel leader Joseph Kony) and his group on promises of ceasefire and peace talks. These people are not committed to such agreements. The government cannot also sit and watch anyone sabotaging the immunization exercise," she said.

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) last week asked the Ugandan government and the LRA rebels to observe an eight-day (From Oct. 14 to 21) ceasefire to allow the immunization exercise going on.
