The fifth meeting of Nepal-China consultation mechanism kicked off Thursday evening in Kathmandu to exchange views on various topics concerning consolidation of China-Nepal relations.

"The Chinese government is positive toward extending assistance possible in the efforts to the Nepali government for the all-round development of the country," said Wang Yi, vice-minister of the Chinese Foreign Ministry, who is leading a Chinese delegation.

Wang Yi said that China fully supports and will extend assistance in the steps taken by the Nepali government for maintaining peace, stability and security in the country.

Discussions were also held on construction of a trans-border road, a hospital for civil servants and a polytechnic institute as well as on Nepal's socio-economic development and political situation, Wang said after the meeting.

The two sides also exchanged views on bilateral ties, various aspects of political and economic relations as well as on projects implemented in Nepal with China's assistance, their review and present status of these projects, he noted.

Matters relating to identification of areas of trade expansion and investment, social and cultural exchange and tourism promotion were also discussed during the meeting, he added.

The consultation mechanism between the foreign ministries of Nepal and China was constituted in 1996 with the objective of holding consultations on matters relating to bilateral, regional and international affairs of mutual interest.

The fourth meeting of the consultation mechanism was held in Beijing in October last year.
