Wei Jianguo, China's Vice-Minister of Commerce, Thursday called on Chinese companies to grasp opportunities to obtain more purchase orders from the United Nations.

In 2002, the United Nations purchased nearly 5 billion US dollars worth of commodities worldwide, just over 30 million dollars of which came from China, said Wei, adding that the situation failed to match China's position as a world trade giant.

A lack of knowledge of the UN's purchasing rules and procedures by Chinese firms was the main reason behind the situation, said Wei at a meeting on UN purchases, held in Dongguan, south China's Guangdong Province.

The United Nations has for the first time dispatched officials --- 14 from its 11 purchasing sectors --- to Dongguan to introduce its purchasing requirements, procedures and rules to Chinese enterprises.

Similar introductory meetings were also held in Beijing and Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong Province.

China's economic and technological cooperation with the United Nations began in 1979, when China signed a basic cooperation agreement with the UN Development Programme (UNDP). To date, the UNDP has offered nearly 600 projects, valued at 800 million dollars, toChina.
