Official: more efforts needed to train younger martial artists

Painstaking efforts must be made to train younger martial artists for the major matches in the following decade, said Wang Xiaolin, director with the section of martial arts at the General Administration of Sport (GAS) in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province on Saturday.

Painstaking efforts must be made to train younger martial artists for the major matches in the following decade, said Wang Xiaolin, director with the section of martial arts at the General Administration of Sport (GAS) in Zhuzhou Saturday.

The younger athletes must target at the Asian Games and even the Olympic Games, said Wang, who told the opening ceremony of the Wushu tournament of the 5th Chinese City Games, which raised its curtain on Saturday in Zhuzhou city, south China's Hunan province.

Approximately 180 martial artists, mainly aged between 15 to 17,from some 26 cities participate in the Wushu matches comprising 10 gold medals in two categories of free combat and route. "Most of them are potential athletes and winners of the preliminary contests," said Zhou Jinbiao, GAS official in charge of free combat.

Zhou said even though it would be unreasonable to expect a very high level match here, the Games will surely serve as a tryout forlater international matches and select the most talented young players. "We hope we can find promising stars at this young-talent show," he said.

The sports administrations at all levels are much concerned about the training programs especially on the younger players but a variety of scientific technologies and mechanism are needed to further improve the effect, said Wang, who also called for a more systematic management on local sports schools, teams and training programs.

An established international sport, Wushu or Martial Arts was introduced in the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing as an official medal match. It is also vying for the Olympic Games in the 21st century.

Beginning as an ancient Chinese form of self-defense, Wushu literally means "Martial Arts" and encompasses the forms popularly known in the West as Kung-fu and Taichi. Over the past decades, Wushu has developed from a combat style into a dynamic performance-orientated art. It emphasizes speed, flexibility, balance, coordination and presentation, resulting in an athletic and aesthetically powerful competitive sport.
