Hundreds of demonstrators from Thailand on Sunday morning took to the streets in Bangkok, protesting against the visit by US President George W. Bush.

Raising banners which read "Stop Bush Addicted to War," "US Troops out of Iraq," "No Bush No War" and "Wage Peace Now," the demonstrators also protest the proposed free trade agreement between Thailand and the United States.

Bush arrived in Bangkok on Saturday night to pay a state visit to Thailand before attending the Economic Leaders Meeting of Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) on Oct. 20-21.

Among the demonstrators were students, farmers, Muslims and members of non-governmental organizations from various groups.

They also distributed leaflets to pedestrians condemning the free trade policy pursued by the United States and other developed countries that ignore the interests of farmers in developing countries.

Forming a 100-meter-long procession, they chanted "Bush, Go Away" while walking through the Siam Square, a favorite venue for Thai youths to hang around.

One block away from the demonstration scene, Bush and Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra were holding a meeting at the Erwan Hyatt Hotel.

Despite the vehement rhetoric, the protest went peacefully, while Bangkok residents enjoyed a Sunday by shopping and meeting with friends at cafe.

The authorities deployed hundreds of policemen along the demonstration route to prevent any violence from occurring.

Trying to ensure a smooth process of the APEC meetings, the Thai government has earlier declared "no entry" for certain groups of aliens who tried to hold protests in Bangkok during the APEC annual meetings.
