Russian President Vladimir Putin said here Sunday that Russia supports a non-nuclear status on the Korean Peninsula, urging all parties involved to strengthen negotiations on the nuclear issue of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Putin arrived in Bangkok Sunday afternoon to attend the leaders meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum, which will start on Monday. He made the remarks when addressing the APEC CEO Summit meeting.

Answering questions raised by the business leaders from the APEC region, Putin said the overwhelming majority of the countries in the world are willing to see a nuclear non-proliferation regime. Russia is against any step that would undermine this regime, and supports a non-nuclear status of the Korean Peninsula, said Putin, adding that Russia will do its best to help preserve the status as long as possible.

"In order to reach a settlement on the DPRK nuclear issue, we must take into consideration the interests of all parties involved in the process, including the security interests of DPRK," he said. He added that Russia will do its best to convince all the sides concerned not to spoil the established negotiation process for the issue, but rather to strengthen it. "If we follow this principle, we will be able to reach a positive result."

On APEC activities, Putin said Russia wants to expand its economic relationship with APEC members, which would be part of the process in modernizing Russian economy. He said Russia plans to finish constructing a liquefied natural gas plant in 2007, which would provide a new energy source for APEC members.

He also invited private companies represented at the meeting to join Russia's efforts in exploring for more oil and gas in Siberia He said he expects Russia's gross domestic product will grow at least 6 percent in 2004.
