Efforts urged to build a skillful contingent of vocational workers

A senior Chinese official called here Monday for great efforts to build a high-quality and skillful contingent of vocational workers to meet the demand of the country's economic and technological development.

A senior Chinese official called here Monday for great efforts to build a high-quality and skillful contingent of vocational workers to meet the demand of the country's economic and technological development.

Huang Ju, a Standing Committee member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, made the call in a congratulatory letter to the opening of the national final competition on vocational skills held in Changchun, capital of northeast China's Jilin province.

"It was an important and imperative task to cultivate a large number of technical workers of high quality in order to build a well-off society in an all-round way and realize the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation," said Huang, also vice-premier of the State Council.

Wang Zhaoguo, member of the Political Bureau of the CPC central committee and chairman of the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech on the occasion.

"Forceful measures should be taken to guide and help workers to master modern technology and continuously enhance workers' vocational skills and overall quality," said Wang.

Around 460 lathemen, locksmiths, millers, and welders throughout the country, all winners from the preliminary competition, which began in April, will attend the final vocational skill competition.

The competition, expected to last till Nov. 4, is jointly sponsored by the All-China Federation of Trade Unions, the State Development and Reform Commission, the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
