A record high 84,530 business people have so far participated in the ongoing 94th China (Guangzhou) Export Commodities Fair, being held from Oct. 15 to 30 here, capital of south China's Guangdong Province, Xu Bing, spokesman for the fair, said Monday.

Held on an area of 360,000 square meters, the fair highlighted electronics, electrical appliances, textiles and garments, machinery, foodstuffs and medicine from Oct. 15 to 20, and office and outdoor articles, home furnishing, gifts, decorations, knitwear, horticulture, carvings, and jewelry from Oct. 21 to 30.

The number of participants rose by a big margin compared with the figure of the 93rd fair, which was held in April, and grew by 10.8 percent compared with that at the 92nd fair in October 2002.

Guangdong was one of the areas worst-hit by SARS earlier this year and many business delegations withdrew from the 93rd fair.

More than 13 billion US dollars worth of contracts on exports of China's commodities were signed from Oct. 15 to 20, up 9.5 percent from the corresponding period of the 92nd fair. Machinery and electronic products were still the major export items with volume valued at 7.33 billion dollars.

The European Union was still the No. 1 importer of China's commodities with the volume valued at 3.37 billion dollars, followed by the United States with 2.09 billion dollars and the Middle East region with 1.77 billion dollars.
