US President George Bush has called for speedy solutions to the Sudan conflict which is Africa's longest war, the visiting US Secretary of State Collin Powell disclosed late Tuesday.

Addressing a joint press conference in Nairobi after meeting Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki at State House, Powell said Sudanese have suffered for too long and "This was window of opportunity that should not be wasted."

< "US President Bush has sent me on his behalf to encourage the parties to move as fast as possible to resolve the outstanding issues of power sharing and wealth and three areas in dispute," Powell said.

He said the success of the talks is an important goal for the Bush administration.

Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki said at the press conference that Kenya was grateful to the United States for the support it continues to offer for the success of the peace process in the Sudan. "We discussed Sudan peace process and agreed that this IGAD initiative provides the best approach to resolve the long standing conflict in the Sudan," Kibaki said.

The talks appear to be going well, but there are still sticking points on issues including Sudan's oil wealth and power-sharing.

An estimated 1.5 million people have died in the war between Sudan's Islamic and Arabic north and the Christian and Animist south.

Hopes are high that an agreement will soon be reached as a result of the on-going talks in the Kenyan town of Naivasha.

Sudan's Vice-President Ali Osman Taha and chief southern rebel leader John Garang have both said they are determined to reach a settlement to end Africa's longest-running civil war.
