Life is returning to normal in Dayao County, southwest China's Yunnan Province, which was struck by an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale on Oct. 16.

Na Yunde, head of Dayao County Government, said water and powersupplies, and telecommunication and transport services had been resumed.

Dangerous houses had been dismantled, and residents who were badly affected in the earthquake have now moved into new quake-proof shelters, while those injured in the earthquake had been hospitalized, and students had resumed classes, said the county government head.

"Most farmers in the earthquake-hit villages have begun to resume agricultural production or rebuild new homes, and the most badly needed supplies at the moment are cement, timber and tiles, as residents will face difficulties over the coming winter," said Na.

The quake jolted the Yi Autonomous Prefecture of Chuxiong, withthe epicenter being focused at Liuju Town of Dayao County, some 180 km from Kunming, killing three people and injuring 36 others. Over 12,000 houses collapsed and it is estimated that the economiclosses caused by the disaster will come to over 500 million yuan (over 60 million US dollars).

Soldiers, armed police, militia, medical workers and officials have been working to help residents.

Large quantities of relief materials, including 1,100 tents, 1,025 quilts, 13 tons of grain and medicine worth 100,000 yuan (about 12,048 US dollars), have been sent to Dayao.

Located at the junction of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau, Yunnan Province suffers frequent earthquakes.

According to the provincial seismological bureau, the province has been jolted by 15 earthquakes measuring over 6 on the Richter scale since 1949, leaving over 18,000 dead.

A strong quake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale struck Dayao on July 21 this year, killing 16 and injuring over 400 people.
