The Japanese government is to work out a long-term program for its space research and development activities.

A commission under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has made a decision to map out a 30-year space plan after China's successful launch of a manned spacecraft, said Kyodo News on Wednesday.

The move is also responding to the mounting criticism that Japan lacks a long-term vision regarding space development, said Kyodo.

A taskforce is expected to be set up by the end of this year. It would join the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, a combination of three former space agencies, in working on the plan.

Experts and officials would study the significance of manned spacecraft for Japan and major space projects after the completion of the International Space Station set for 2008. Japan is one of the participants of the multinational program.
