Jiang Zemin meets Canadian PM
Jiang Zemin, chairman of the Central Military Commission (CMC), met Thursday with Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien, who is here on the second leg of his four-day China visit.

Jiang said the Chinese and Canadian people had a long history of contacts and Canada was one of the first Western countries to establish diplomatic relations with China.

Exchange and cooperation between China and Canada in various fields had seen marked progress and their partnership of all-round cooperation had been consolidated in recent years, Jiang said.

As big countries on the Pacific Ocean, both China and Canada were important members of international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC), and they shared extensive common interests in many areas, Jiang said.

Jiang said Sino-Canadian relations should be handled from a strategic perspective. Both sides should proceed from the fundamental interests of the two countries and their people, add more vigor to their partnership of all-round cooperation, making it a model for countries with different cultures, social systems and different economic levels to develop friendly cooperation for common development, he said.

Under the economic globalization and world multi-polarization, China and Canada faced many identical or similar challenges and shared common views on a number of major international and regional issues, said Jiang.

He said China was willing to enhance coordination and cooperation with Canada to help build a just and rational international political and economic new order.

Recalling more than ten meetings with Jiang, Chretien thanked him for his contributions to the development of bilateral relations, saying Canada was glad the new Chinese leadership attached great importance to ties with Canada.

Canada considered China an important partner for cooperation and it would continue to make efforts to promote bilateral ties, he added.
