Li Jie wins the women's 200m butterfly but fails to reach Olympic A standard

Li Jie failed to reach the Olympic A standard of the women's 200 meters butterfly in spite ofher victory in the distance at the 5th Chinese City Games Thursday evening.

Li Jie wins the women's 200m butterfly but fails to reach Olympic A standard
Li Jie failed to reach the Olympic A standard of the women's 200 meters butterfly in spite of her victory in the distance at the 5th Chinese City Games Thursday evening.

The 19-year-old Li Jie charged to win the 200m butterfly in twominutes 11.28 seconds, 0.08 seconds shy of the Olympic A standard. Zhang Tianyi, 13, was timed 2:12.63 to settle for the second place.Bronze came to Cui Li from Guangzhou in 2:12.70.

"I didn't start well today but surged from the last 100 meters.Though bettered my personal best with 0.5 seconds, it is a pity that I didn't manage to reach the Olympic A standard," said Li Jieat the press conference after competition.

The swimming competition at the Games was ratified by the worldgoverning body of the sport FINA as an eligible qualification for Athens Olympic Games.

Men's 200m breaststroke title was taken by Fan Luojun from Kunming in 2:16.70, which was his personal best. He also won the 100m breaststroke earlier on Monday. Wu Dong came to second in 2:18.07 and Guo Zhifang from Guangzhou third in 2:18.60.

Huang Shaohua, 19, led all the way through to victory in 50.92 to grab the men's 100m freestyle for Nanning. The 20-year-old Bao Jingtao followed at heel in 51.14 while Du Wentao brought Nanjing a bronze in 51.74.

Shanghai Huangpu won the women's 4x200m freestyle relay in 8:03.71. Hangzhou finished second in 8:09.90, with the bronze taken away by Shenzhen at 8:19.86.
