Ministers from more than a dozen countries joined forces to launch the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (REEEP) in London on Thursday.

This move is aimed at developing a global network to promote the spread of renewable energy and more efficient use of energy.

n his address to the conference regarding the REEEP's future direction, British Environment Secretary Margaret Beckett said that "a global low carbon economy is within our grasp. But we need to work together to achieve it, to reduce costs and share knowledge, experience and practice."

He expressed confidence that "the REEEP will play a vital role in helping us to get there." The event brought together energy and environment ministers from every corner of the globe including India, France, the United States and the Philippines.

British Trade Secretary Patricia Hewitt said a global sustainable-energy, low-carbon economy need a global participation and "policy-makers, business and civil society need to work closely together to deliver the changes we need."

In February 2003, Britain published the Energy White Paper, its first comprehensive forward looking statement of energy policy in over 20 years, with a key aim of a 60 percent cut in carbon dioxide emissions by about 2050.

Partners in the REEEP will work in three areas, namely, identifying and removing policy and regulatory barriers to market development, helping to match finance with renewable and energy efficiency projects and providing strategic direction.
