Beijing wins bid to host 2006 women's softball worlds

China's Beijing was named as host of 2006 women's world softball championship, winning the vote from the International Softball Federation's (ISF's) executive committee Saturday in Nanjing.

China's Beijing was named as host of 2006 women's world softball championship, winning the vote from the International Softball Federation's (ISF's) executive committee Saturday in Nanjing.

Beijing was comfortable winner in their bid to stage the tournament, beating Italy's Verona and South Africa's Cape Town.

Beijing polled 52 votes from the committee, which gathered 121 officials and representatives from 41 countries and regions. Verona got 28 votes and Cape Town. 12.

The United State won gold at 2002 world championship held in Canada, beating Japan with silver and Chinese Taipei with bronze.

China did not take part in an ISF women's world championship until 1986 in Auckland. In their five appearances they picked up two silver medals and one bronze. In addition they won a silver medal at Atlanta Olympics in 1996.
