Rashid Hotel compound in Baghdad attacked again

A heavily fortified compound in central Baghdad, where a luxurious hotel housing US officials, came under attack again Sunday evening. The previous attack at the Rashid Hotel, standing opposite the headquarters building, took place Sunday morning, killing one US soldier and wounding 15 others.

A heavily fortified compound in central Baghdad, where a luxurious hotel housing US officials, came under attack again Sunday evening.

A US military spokesman said two explosions occurred at the compound, where the headquarters of the US-led coalition is also located. The blasts were triggered by a fresh barrage of rockets fired from southern Baghdad and falling on the compound.

The previous attack at the Rashid Hotel, standing opposite the headquarters building, took place Sunday morning, killing one US soldier and wounding 15 others.

US Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz, currently visiting the country and believed to be in his room in the hotel, escaped unscathed.

The pair of attacks, apparently planned and prepared for a long time, coincided with the starting of Ramadan, or Muslim fasting month, the first for Iraqis to observe under the US-led occupation.
