Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing Monday hailed President Hu Jintao's three-nation tour as a success which has promoted friendship and enhanced co-operation.

Hu's 11-day tour encompassed Thailand, Australia and New Zealand. He also made his presidential debut at the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation summit in Bangkok after his state visit to Thailand.

"The visits have a great significance in promoting peace and development in Asia-Pacific and the world at large," Li told the press yesterday before leaving Auckland.

Li said the presidential tour has also helped create a favourable international and regional environment for the country's endeavour to build a comprehensively well-off society.

Hu conveyed the message that the Chinese leadership attached great importance to developing friendly ties with the three nations when meeting their leaders.

He also raised proposals on how to conduct co-operation with Thailand in a spirit of good neighbourliness and mutual trust as well as how to deepen China's comprehensive co-operation with Australia and New Zealand, two developed countries in the South Pacific region.

Hu suggested China and Thailand make good use of the newly established trade and economic co-operation mechanism at vice-prime-ministerial level to further expand their bilateral trade partnership. Hu and Thai leaders agreed to push harder to build a free trade area between China and the Association of South-East Asian Nations starting from the implementation of zero tariffs on vegetables and fruits.

He expressed China's willingness to expand co-operation with Australia and New Zealand on the basis of equality, mutual benefit and non-discrimination and to establish long-term and stable co-operation with them in the areas of energy, mineral resources, agriculture, pasturing and forestry.

Australia pledged to further expand long-term bilateral co-operation in areas including energy while giving a high appraisal of the China-Australia Trade and Economic Framework.

New Zealand leaders said they look forward to establishing a closer and more effective trade and economic relations with China.
