China taking the lead in artificial afforestation in the world

Oct.26 saw the curtain fall for the first China International Workshop for Sustainable Development of Forestry and Timbering Industry. As revealed at the workshop China's preserved artificial forest covers 700m mu, accounting for 26 percent of the world��s total and boasting the world's top.

Oct.26 saw the curtain fall for the first China International Workshop for Sustainable Development of Forestry and Timbering Industry. As revealed at the workshop China's preserved artificial forest covers 700m mu, accounting for 26 percent of the world��s total and boasting the world's top.

Zhou Shengxian, head of the State Forestry Administration, said at the workshop that the forest area in China has increased to 2.38b. mu and the growing stock of stumpage to 12.5b. cubic meters. The forest coverage has been increased to 16.55 percent at present from 8.6 percent in 1950s'. The forest resources are under effective protection and development. The forestry has provided the community with over 5b cubic meters timber and 8b pieces of bamboo poles with over 8.2b person /time to have taken part in voluntary tree-planting campaign. Zhou Shengxian added that China's forestry industry will be further opened to the outside world and all circles overseas are welcomed to engage in the afforestation and manufacturing, processing, and trading of forest products in forms of solely-funded, joint venture, shareholding and contracting and leasing as well. The Chinese government and forestry department at various levels will create a more convenient environment and favorable conditions for investors.

As learned the Workshop is jointly sponsored by China National Forestry Development Research Center and Global Timber Development Co., Ltd from Hong Kong. Ms. Chen Yanhua, chairwoman of Global Timber delivered a lecture at the conference, introducing her company��s blueprint to support China's afforestation development. Ms. Chen's efforts has led to the upcoming international timber trade market, the biggest in the world, which is initiated and funded by giants and consortia from China, US, Malaysia, Australia, UK, France, Italy, and New Zealand.
