The Spanish discount chain store "Dia" opened its first two shops in Beijing on Thursday and plans to expand its business in the city at the speed of opening two stores a week.

Mainly selling food and daily goods, Dia stores prefer to sell products of its own brand. In its store, about 30 percent of products are with the trademark of "Dia".

To date, "Dia" has opened more than 4,000 stores in eight countries and employed about 28,000 people all over the world. Its global sales reached six billion euros in 2002.

Today, there are 26 "Dia" stores in China's economic hub Shanghai and there would be 320 "Dia" stores in Beijing in the coming five years.

Discount shops emerged in the 1960s in Europe and are experiencing rapid development.
