The visit by China's top legislator, Wu Bangguo, is important in the development of relations between China and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), said Chinese Vice-Foreign Minister Wang Yi Friday in Pyongyang.

Wang made the remarks when interviewed by Chinese journalists before the conclusion of Wu's DPRK visit.

Heading a Chinese state delegation, Wu, chairman of the National People's Congress Standing Committee and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee, had just finished a three-day official goodwill visit to the DPRK.

Wang said Wu's meeting with DPRK leader Kim Jong Il was the first official one made by the new Chinese leadership and aroused attention of the international community.

The state delegation is composed of senior officials from the CPC, government and the army, and this demonstrates that China attached great importance to China-DPRK ties, Wang said.

The DPRK side gave a hospitable and high-profile reception to the Chinese delegation and the visit proceeded smoothly and was crowned with success, Wang said.

Wu's visit enriched and developed the principle of "inheriting tradition, facing up to the future, promoting good-neighborly friendship and enhancing cooperation," Wang said. It showed the active determination of the new Chinese leadership in making new progress in bilateral ties under new situation.

Kim Jong Il had said that no matter what changes occurred in the international arena, the Workers' Party of Korea and the DPRK government would continue to be devoted to the consolidation and development of bilateral cooperation, Wang said.

As the DPRK leader said, the DPRK-China relationship is of strategic importance, Wang said. The two sides had agreed to lift bilateral ties to a new high.

Leaders from the two countries also briefed each other on their own domestic situations and exchanged experiences in economic construction, Wang said. The two sides believed that each side should take a development path suitable to its national conditions.

Wu briefed the DPRK side on China's reform and opening-up drive and China's experience in the process, he said.

The two sides also agreed to promote economic and trade cooperation while developing political relations and encouraging communications between the two countries' enterprises, Wang said.

China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity and support the DPRK's practice in rejuvenating its national economy and resolving existing problems, Wang said.
