An efficient network security system is urgently needed to safeguard the information security of individuals and institutional network users, according to sources with a recent forum held in this north China port city.

He Dequan, academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS),said at the forum that China lacks a system to handle network security issues, especially emergencies such as the spread of computer viruses.

Meanwhile, the Chinese public has not been fully aware of the potential dangers posed by the lack of the system, according to He.

The latest statistics with the National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center show that 83 percent of China's personal computers were infected with viruses for more than three times in 2003, up 25 percent compared to the previous year.

Qu Chengyi, expert of a national information panel, said that in addition to computer viruses, China's network security is challenged by hackers and computer crimes, leakage of confidential information, online terrorism and disputes over network related issues.

In fact, the fragility of China's network security system has been evidenced by the losses caused by the fast spread of the virus-like "Blaster" worm in China early this year, said He Dequan.

To better protect the information security of China's individual and institutional computer users, it is necessary to promote the development of information security industry and produce self-developed information security products, said Qu Chengyi.
