World champions Shen/Zhao beaten in Canada figure skating

World champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China were beaten into second place by Russians Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin at Skate Canada figure skating event in Mississauga on Friday.

World champions Shen Xue and Zhao Hongbo of China were beaten into second place by Russians Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin at Skate Canada figure skating event in Mississauga on Friday.

The Russian duo, who were runners-up to the Chinese at the world championships last year, collected 25,000 US dollars in first-place prize money following Friday's pair freeskate.

Shen and Zhao had to go home with 18,000 US dollars as they failed to hold onto their lead after the first-day short program.

Totmianina/Marinin finished with 194.02 points, while Shen/Zhaocollected 191.80.

Poland's Dorota Zagorska and Mariusz Siudek were third with 171.75 points.

American Sasha Cohen, who was fourth at the world championshipsthe last two years, earned 71.12 points to lead the women's singles after Friday's short program.

Japanese teen Yukina Ota is second with 63.90 points while her compatriot Shizuka Arakawa is third at 58.20. The women's free skate will be held on Saturday.
