British ruling Labor Party announced Sunday that the party's general secretary David Triesman is quitting his job in the coming New Year.
In a statement, the party said Triesman had achieved his aims of dealing with Labor's severe financial problems after the 2001 general election, ensuring the party owned its national headquarters for the first time and reorganizing the party's staffing and structures.
Triesman had met the three main goals he set himself when he took the post in July 2001, and had "decided to move on," said thestatement, which did not mention who will replace Triesman.
"The prime minister believes David has done an excellent job for the Labor Party and is discussing with him what more he can dofor the party in the future," it said.
Meanwhile, British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott denied rumors that Triesman steps down because of internal stresses at Labor headquarters.
"He has done a remarkable job in the couple of years that he has been general secretary of this party," Prescott told BBC One'sPolitics Show on Sunday.
"He inherited a massive financial deficit. He has dealt with it," Prescott said.
