At least 24 people were killed after a luxury tourist bus from Gujarat plunged into a valley in Satara district of Maharashtra late Saturday night, according to the Press Trust of India (PTI) on Sunday.

The accident occurred just before midnight on a mountain road near Mahabaleshwar, a hill resort 150 km southeast of Mumbai, when the bus, going from Panchgani to Mahabaleshwar, fell into the 200 feet deep valley near Buha Saheb temple on the Panchgani-Wai road, PTI reported quoting police sources.

Police said the bus's driver was negotiating a bend in the road when he lost control of the vehicle which skidded and crashed into a gorge, nearly 200 feet below.

A total of 56 passengers were traveling in the bus when the mishap occurred. Residents of nearby villages and police pulled out 30 people who were injured in the crash and took them to a hospital, police said, adding they also found the bodies of 24 passengers, including two children. Two passengers remain missing.

Rescue work is on under the police's supervision, PTI said.
