The death toll from the flash floods in Indonesia's North Sumatra province has risen to 66, including five foreign tourists.

Local officials said dozens of people are missing in the flood, which swept through a tourist resort area near a national park in Langkat regency, some 90 km from the provincial capital of Medan, The Jakarta Post online news service reported Monday.

The flood, triggered by days of torrential rains, caused the nearby Bohorok river to overflow its banks. It took place late Sunday in Bohorok, close to the provincial capital of Medan in North Sumatra province.

Officials blamed illegal logging in the national park for the flood.

Langkat regency is famous as a rehabilitation center for orangutan and is frequented by foreign tourists for rafting.

In another development, in Central Java province, a massive landslide has destroyed 115 houses at four villages in Kebumen regency, but there was no report of casualty.

Adi Nugroho, a spokesman for the Kebumen administration, said the landslide caused an estimated 265.3 million rupiah (31,211 US dollars) in material losses.

"The disaster was triggered by an uninterrupted rain for three days in the area," he said.
