China is qualified to join G8 and should be let into the club of world powers as early as possible, said Klaus Schwab, president of the World Economic Forum (WEF), on November 2.

Schwab made the remark at the Bo'ao Forum for Asia annual conference, saying China is comparable with any G8 members in terms of economic aggregate, technological conditions and population elements, therefore should be regarded as a world power. He also joked that "at least 6 out of the 8 didn't send man to space".

The Bo'ao Asia Forum, as the most active form for regional cooperation, especially for China's role in Asia cooperation, said Schwab, has become a strong, important force pushing forward world economy. The Cancun meeting failed to yield expected results and the international trade system is facing great pressure. He hopes leaders attending the Forum don't give up Doha progress and urged representatives at the Forum to make efforts to continuously support WTO.

Bilateral and regional trade agreements shouldn't be damaged, he said, or become the substitute for multilateralization. The smallest and poorest members of WTO should join the international trade system equally. As a comparatively new member of the WTO and the biggest developing country, China will play an implacable role in bridging the gap between the North and the South.
