S.African president makes 30 trips in one year: report

South African President Thabo Mbeki -- often criticized for the amount of time he spends out of the country -- made just 30 foreign trips between April 2002 and March 2003.

South African President Thabo Mbeki -- often criticized for the amount of time he spends out of the country -- made just 30 foreign trips between April 2002 and March 2003.

According to the presidency's annual report tabled in the parliament, 18 of the 30 trips were to countries in Africa, the South African Press Association reported.

The remaining 12 were trips overseas, mainly to Europe and South America. Mbeki visited the United Kingdom twice; once for the SA/UK bilateral forum and once to meet with his British counterpart Tony Blair.

He also visited Brazil twice.

High on Mbeki's agenda in Africa was the Burundi peace process and the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa's Development (NEPAD). He visited Arusha, Tanzania, twice for talks on Burundi and Nigeria also twice for meetings on NEPAD.

His third visit to Nigeria was for a meeting of the Commonwealth troika.

The president has also visited Senegal, Mozambique, Comoros, Zambia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Angola, Botswana, Algeria and Ethiopia.

His trips out of the continent included Norway, Italy, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Canada, Fiji Island, the US, Cambodia, Malaysia and Paris.

According to the annual report, this period covered a time whenMbeki was chairperson of both the Non-aligned Movement and the African Union.
