South Korea will begin deploying US-made missiles with a range of 300 kilometers from next month, Yonhap News Agency reported Wednesday, quoting a military source.

The deployment comes as part of a 300 million US dollars military improvement program under which South Korea will purchaseby next year some 110 surface-to-surface missiles with a range of 300 kilometers, according to the source of South Korean Defense Ministry.

The Army Tactical Missile System Block 1A missiles, made by Lockheed Martin, are an improved version of a similar type South Korea introduced in 1997. The earlier version had a range of 165 kilometers.

South Korea plans to deploy most of the new missiles along with10 launchers close to the 248-kilometer long demilitarized zone separating South Korea and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, said the source.

Under a 1979 accord with the United States, South Korea had been barred from developing missiles with a range longer than 180 kilometers until 2001 when it was allowed to extend the range to 300 kilometers.
